Starlet

The starlet sits
At the edge of her bed
Thinking back to simpler
And much less wealthy,
Corrupt times.

The starlet sits and cries for the days
When the heroin was cheap
And the producers
Didn’t break her will
Just to win a starring role.

The starlet dies each night
Knowing this wild,
Tainted childhood dream
Has collapsed around her
Like a broken glass pyramid.

The starlet can’t take it
And she lies down
With no one at all to hold her
And now, a fresh bullet wound in the back
Of her chemically treated scalp
